DESCRIPTION:The 20th annual Apple Valley 5k cross country race will be held Saturday\, Nov. 4\, beginning at 10a.m. at Gross’ Orchard. The 3.1-mile course runs on mostly grass and gravel paths and includes two hay bale barriers. Race is entirely off-road and is open to runners and walkers of all ages and abilities. The entry fee is $15\, postmarked by Oct. 20\, or $20 afterward and on race day beginning at 8 a.m. \nOnline registration is available for $15 plus handling at http://runsignup.com/Race/VA/Bedford/AppleValley5k until midnight on Nov. 2.  \nAll pre-registered runners will receive a T-shirt. DESCRIPTION:37North is a group of jazz musicians living in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia who have united to bring their personalities\, energy\, and stylish jazz interpretations together. 37 degrees north is the latitude coordinate for Bedford County\, VA and the group enjoys celebrating this area of Virginia with their name and music.  \nEach musician’s experience in playing a variety of music genres comes together in an eclectic jazz soundscape. The group’s repertoire includes a crossover style that brings a jazz interpretation to standards\, folk\, regional\, and pop songs\, including some originals by Nichols and Walter. Their music takes aim at creating a sense of scenery\, introspection\, and inspiration and mesmerizes listeners.  \nAbout the Musicians \nJazz trumpeter Scott Walter\, Bedford Community Orchestra (BCO) conductor  enjoys introducing and interweaving melodic and harmonic ideas with Karen Nichols\, on keyboard and vocals. Karen\, who also plays with the BCO has a versatile background as a performer and songwriter\, adding rich\, textured chords to the harmonic mix. Ben Masters\, on upright acoustic bass\, is another member of the BCO and enjoys adding low tone colors to 37North’s tonal palette\, while BCO drummer/percussionist Patrick Skelley\, who has played for thirty years with ensembles up and down the East Coast\, adds rhythmic figures\, timing and interesting percussive sounds to the group’s performances. \nTickets: $10 in advance | $12 at the door \nCash Bar is Available \nTicket Locations: Bower Center office or Online.

Lure coursing is a humane sport which recreates the chase of the hare by the pursuing hound. The “bunny” consists of strips of white plastic attached to a continuous loop line that runs through a series of pulleys to simulate the zigzag path of a rabbit on the run \nMuskrat Races\nThis event uses the Jack Russell Terrier’s highly developed prey drive to swim through water in pursuit of an artificial lure. \nDogs of all shapes and sizes are invited to swim across the pond in pursuit of an artificial lure. There will be three divisions of competition: small\, medium\, and large dogs. The winner in each division will receive a trophy \nParade of Horses\nProvided and directed by Reba Farm Inn and Saddle Soar Equitainment.\nThe Horse parade will continue to be a crowd pleaser with a wide variety of horses to be exhibited. In addition there will be new and exciting events such as: featured wild horses from the herd on the outer banks\, N.C. and a Chincoteague pony from Virginia’s Assateague Island. \n Kiddie Korral\n Supervised activities for children simulating rodeo games and quiet games as well throughout the day. Supervision by the staff and volunteers of  Brook Hill Farm Rehabilitation and Rescue \nPart of the proceeds will benefit 501-3c organizations that benefit horses and dogs. 11am-6pm

Desmond Doss\, a Lynchburg native who refused to carry a weapon\, served as a medic in World War II. The conscientious objector saved as many as 75 men during the battle of Okinawa.  President Harry S. Truman presented Doss with the Medal of Honor on October 12\, 1945. Academy-award winning film Hacksaw Ridge introduced Doss’s heroic story to millions.  Admission is free; seating is limited.  The Memorial will be open 10 a.m. – 5 p.m. \n  \n  \nJoin Poplar Forest from 11 a.m. – 4 p.m. for the kind of Independence Day celebration that might have intrigued Thomas Jefferson himself.  Enjoy live musical performances\, colonial-period entertainment\, archaeology displays\, children’s activities and more! \n
