DESCRIPTION:James Triesler\, Director of Education at the Virginia War Memorial\, will speak on the wartime postal system that was a vital line of communication for those in uniform and their families at home. Getting a letter meant everything—but it wasn’t always easy or timely. Censorship\, special family codes\, microfilmed V-Mail—these were all part of the story. Triesler will also pay special tribute to the 6888th Postal Battalion\, the only all-African American\, all-female unit to serve overseas during WWII.

SUMMARY:Night Hike at Claytor Nature Center
DESCRIPTION:This program gives people the opportunity to experience the outdoors after dark and to investigate the adaptations that allow bats to be active at night. We may see and hear bats and other animals that are not often encountered in the daytime. There will be discussions about the unique habitat that bats require to thrive and the threats and competition that they face.\nThe hike will be about a mile with frequent breaks. No flashlights or cell phone lights will be permitted\, as they interfere with night vision and some of the experiments that we will be conducting. It will be dusk when we begin and dark by the time the hike concludes. This program is appropriate for children 6 and up.
