SUMMARY:The Electric Company Art Gallery Event
DESCRIPTION:Join Wood Carver Stan Fettig at the Electric Company Art Gallery on May 12th from 5 PM to 8 PM for 2nd Friday! \nStan began carving at age 12 while in the Boy Scouts with a project of a neckerchief slide. His interest in carving continued through his military career where he made contact with other carvers. Here he learned various different techniques and became acquainted with better tools and how to sharpen them. This he carried into civilian life and better honed his craft in all the years that followed. \nEarly carvings were mostly primitive and small using only a pocket knife. He slowly built a small collection of better tools as he continued to carve on and off while working in telecommunications through his career. Since his retirement he spends more time at the bench working on projects from animals to birds and Santas. His carvings range from in the round to relief and chip carving. He carves mostly American Basswood which is readily available in up to 4 inch thick stock. When he can find it he also uses Tupelo which is a better wood for bird carving. \nStan began to teach carving about 4 years ago after joining a woodcarving club in Florida where he went for vacation. Some people who had never carved showed up wanting to learn and asked who the instructor was. No one else spoke up so Stan said “I can teach you” and proceeded with a cowboy boot. Because he wants people to learn the art and carry it on he has continued to teach those interested. He recently did a small training session at Liberty HS for some art students who all completed their boots with great success. They walked away with some basic knowledge of how to work the knife through the wood to create a work of art.

SUMMARY:Bedford Community Orchestra Spring Concert
DESCRIPTION:“Follow the Yellow Brick Road” \nThe Yellow Brick Road leads to Bedford! \nJoin the Bedford Community Orchestra for their Spring Concert on Saturday\, April 29\, at 7:30pm in the Bedford Middle School Auditorium located at 503 Longwood Ave in the town Bedford. \nThe Wizard of Oz won an Academy Award for Best Original Song for “Over the Rainbow” in 1939 and became known as Judy Garland’s signature song. The BCO will bring Dorothy\, the Lion\, Tinman\, and the Scarecrow to Bedford as they perform selections from the Wizard of Oz including “We’re Off to See the Wizard\, If I Only Had a Brain\, Merry Land of Oz\, Ding Dong the Witch is Dead\, and Over the Rainbow.” \nThe orchestra will also be performing Igor Stravinsky’s Rite of Spring. In 1913\, the Rite of Spring was written to accompany a ballet performance depicting various ritual dances of Spring\, where a young girl was chosen to be sacrificed\, who later dances herself to death. In Paris\, the premier performance of this avant-garde ballet caused a riot and theater-goes chased the composer and choreographer out of the theater and down the street. The following year\, the Rite of Spring music score was performed without the ballet\, as a concert piece with only the orchestra\, and both Stravinsky and the music received the highest reviews. The Rite of Spring has since been considered by many as one of the most influential works of the 20th century. \nOther selections for the evening will include the spanish Serenata and Arietta\, both by Leroy Anderson\, Michel Legrand’s “You Must Believe in Spring\,” the russian The Red Calvary March\, Procession of the Sardar from Caucasian Sketches\, The Captains and the Kings\, selections from “The King and I”\, Evangeline: Two Cajun Folksongs\, and Duke Ellington’s Caravan! \nSuggest Donation $10/person. For more information visit www.BedfordCommOrch.org or call 540/947-0208.
