DESCRIPTION:Josephine Baker became an unlikely spy for the French Resistance in WWII. Growing up poor in the streets of St. Louis\, Missouri and struggling to survive in an American society plagued with racism\, Baker eventually left the United States and became a cabaret sensation in Paris. \nThere she offered her services as a spy\, noting to the head of the French Intelligence Service\, “The people of Paris have given me everything. They have given me their hearts\, and I have given them mine. I am ready to give them my life.” \nDuring her time in the Resistance\, she collected invaluable information on German troop movements while hiding war refugees in her home. After the war\, Baker received the Croix de Guerre and the Medal of Resistance. \nThis fascinating talk by National D-Day Memorial Foundation President April Cheek-Messier is in celebration of Black History Month. The talk is free and open to the public. Guests are welcome to bring a lunch to enjoy during the program.

The March lecture is being held in honor of Women’s History Month. \nThe Virginia Holocaust Museum contains more than 200 separate accounts of survivors who settled in the Commonwealth after World War II.  Tim Hensley\, the museum’s Director of Collections\, will use the experiences of four women who came to Virginia\, to discuss the obstacles each faced in different parts of Europe in order to survive the Nazis’ attempt to eradicate European Jewry and how each of their stories contributes to what we know about the Holocaust. \n\n\nThe talk is free and open to the public. DESCRIPTION:At our annual Scout Day\, scouts participate in activities that include actual WWII artifacts\, hands-on demonstrations and games\, and have the opportunity to hear about a World War II veteran’s wartime experience—while earning a National D-Day Memorial patch. A guided tour of the Memorial will follow. Admission for each registered scout and scout leader is $5. \nIn the afternoon from 2pm-4pm\, for an additional fee of $5 per Girl or Boy Scout\, we will offer two merit badge programs\, which will be announced at a later date. Space is limited for the afternoon programs to the first 30 scouts. \nAdvance registration and pre-payment is required by Friday\, March 30\, 2018. Space is limited.
