DESCRIPTION:During WWII\, tens of thousands of American airmen were held in German POW camps. Many received from the YMCA and the Red Cross a blank journal called “A Wartime Log” to record their thoughts\, paste photos\, or preserve sketches. Sgt. Robert Folk was one such prisoner; his journal\, now in the D-Day Memorial collection\, gives an important glimpse into life in a German Stalag. Director of Education John D. Long will reveal\, for the first time publicly\, what Folk’s unique vision can teach us. The program is free and open to the public.

DESCRIPTION:Before his death in 2009\, Elisha “Ray” Nance\, the last surviving officer of the “Bedford Boys” –Co. A\, 116th Regiment\, 29th Division—penned an account of his experiences before and after WWII. He intended to publish his book\, but never achieved that dream. Now his children have published his fascinating memoir under the title “Dawn on Omaha Beach: We Were There.” \nA book launch will be held Friday\, October 26\, 2018 at 1:00 p.m. at the National D-Day Memorial’s Johnson Pavilion. Members of the Nance family will be on hand to discuss the book—which follows Nance’s military career from enlisting in the pre-war Virginia National Guard\, to his company’s arrival to England\, to their fateful role played on D-Day.

DESCRIPTION:Bedford Urban Gardens will be hosting a morning of yoga at Bower Center for the Arts (305 North Bridge Street in Bedford) on Saturday\, October 27\, 9 am-12 noon. Local yoga teachers Mitchell Bond\, Ellen Mackey\, and LeAndra Shepherd will each offer a 50-minute practice. Bond will offer a gentle flow practice beginning at 9 am. Mackey will follow with a healthy back practice beginning at 10 am. Shepherd will conclude the morning with a yin practice which includes holding supported poses for a full stretch and complete relaxation.  \nAll are welcome to attend any or all sessions.  Donations will be accepted to support Bedford Urban Gardens.  \nBedford Urban Gardens’ mission is to create a multi-use community center-piece for the Bedford area that will be an open and welcoming space that encourages individuals and families to not only sow the seeds of herbs and vegetables\, but to sow the seeds of community and creativity.
