DESCRIPTION:Bower Community Concert Series\nSunday\, May 19\, 4pm\nTickets\, $10: available at the door and at bowercenter.org \nMountain Highway is an authentic young family band steeped in the traditional bluegrass and gospel music that was originally made famous by icons like Bill Monroe\, Flatt & Scruggs\, and Ralph Stanley. The band is comprised of four sibling singers who play banjo\, fiddle\, mandolin\, and guitar\, with their father playing upright bass. The teens are often heralded for their tight family harmony. \nAfter seeing them perform in Nashville\, Debra Jean Wagoner said\, “I had chill bumps. Their music transported me back to the days when my father Porter Wagoner took me to hear bluegrass at the Ryman Auditorium.” \nBluegrass icon Jamie Dailey said\, “When I heard angelic voices singing harmony to one another from a group called Mountain Highway\, I was stunned! I’m a harmony buff and love hearing it done purely.” \nMountain Highway hails from Lynchburg\, Virginia\, but spends much of its time traveling extensively to perform at popular music venues in several states. A few of their notable appearances have taken place at: Doyle Lawson & Quicksilver Fest (NC)\, HoustonFest/Galax (VA)\, Jerusalem Ridge Celebration (KY)\, and the WindGap Bluegrass Festival (PA).

The latest installment of veteran bricks will also be dedicated. \nKeynote speaker is Alex Kershaw\, journalist and a New York Times bestselling author of books on World War II including “The Bedford Boys: One American Town’s Ultimate D-Day Sacrifice.” There will be a book signing following the ceremony for his newest release\, “The First Wave: The D-Day Warriors Who Led the Way to Victory in World War II.” Books will be available for purchase in the Memorial’s gift store. \nThe Memorial will dedicate a brand new education Quonset hut named after long-time supporter Fleda Ring following the ceremony. The new pavilion is the third Q-hut building to be dedicated within the past two years. In keeping with the educational emphasis of the Memorial\, these Quonset huts mimic Plymouth\, England 1944 where the troops stayed prior to the Normandy invasion. DESCRIPTION:June 6\, 2019 marks the 75th Anniversary of D-Day\, a milestone that is expected to represent the last large gathering of D-Day veterans around the globe.  Events are planned throughout the day. \nAerial Tribute to WWII Veterans – 10:00 a.m. –  Join us as WWII aircraft take to the sky in a breathtaking display and pay tribute to the Greatest Generation who flew them. \n“The Final Salute” Commemorative Observance – 11:00 a.m. – The ceremony will include international dignitaries\, special music\, and Normandy veteran roll-call. \nOn-Site Commemoration Activities – 6:30 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. – Throughout the day\, explore WWII re-enactor displays of units who landed on D-Day; visit “Profiles of Honor\,” the mobile museum dedicated to Virginia’s WWI and WWII veterans; enjoy music from the Enduring Freedom band and USO show; gather with WWII and D-Day veterans in the Veterans Reunion Tent; and partake in our food truck area that is open for breakfast and lunch.
