DESCRIPTION:The town of Bedford becomes a little bit brighter when the English Meadows Elks Home Campus turns on their spectacular Christmas light display! \nThe tradition of lighting the senior living facility has been ongoing for 62 years now.  The display is arranged along the long entrance driveway and around the circle in front of the home’s grand entrance. This is a FREE activity that will leave a memorable impression.  Donations are graciously accepted. \nThe lights are turned on at dusk at about 5 p.m. and turn off at about 10 p.m. from Dec. 1 through Jan. 1.

Oliver\, Free Times Jonathan Byrd is a preacher’s son\, a Gulf War veteran\, and an award-winning songwriter from Chapel Hill\, North Carolina\, known for literary\, outsider songs that have become campfire favorites. The Chicago Tribune called Byrd “one of the top 50 songwriters of the past 50 years.” Multi-instrumentalist Johnny Waken cut his teeth on electric guitar in Pittsburgh with rock legend Norm Nardini\, opening for The Blues Brothers Band on their Red\, Hot & Blue tour in 1992. On stage and after hours\, he jammed with members of Bon Jovi and the legendary Steve Cropper. At the age of 24\, Waken left music to pursue primitive skills and through-hiked the Appalachian Trail in 2000 with an eleven-pound pack. Returning to music years later Johnny joined theatre troupe Paperhand Puppet Intervention\, contributing to scores for nine shows and winning 4 Indy Awards for best original music. Jonathan Byrd and The Pickup Cowboy are musical gunslingers\, vaudevillian hucksters\, and old-fashioned tent revivalists. DESCRIPTION:Bedford Council of Garden Clubs is proud to present the 2017 Bedford Christmas Home Tour on December 3\, 2017 from 1:00 PM to 5:00 PM.  The theme of this year’s home tour is Christmas in the World’s Best Little Town.  WBLT were the call letters of the local radio station founded by Jim Synan in the early 1950’s.  This became the unofficial trademark of the town of Bedford. \nSince 1973 the Bedford Council of Garden Clubs has sponsored a biennial Christmas Home Tour the first of December.  The homes this year are ones in Bedford that the owners so graciously have agreed to open for this liesurely Sunday afternoon tour.  The five unique homes selected for 2017 range from an 1800’s Vernacular to a 1946 Colonial style cottage.   Many points of interest in these homes allow opportunities for the garden club members to showcase their many talents and creativity. The Bower Center for the Arts will be open to the public as a tour stop where refreshments will be served.  The recent renovation of the Bower Center and the art exhibits showcased will add appeal for those who visit. \nTickets for the 2017 Christmas Home Tour are $15.00 in advance and $20.00 the day of the tour.  The program containing information on the homes and the advertisements are the ticket  for the tour and must be presented at the door to visit the home.  The funds raised from this event are for the many projects of the clubs belonging to the Bedford Council\, the Council itself\, the Virginia Federation of Garden Clubs\, and National Garden Clubs\, Inc.  Therefore the tickets are non-refundable.  Your program/ticket provides access to these properties at the time of the tour.   \nThe Bedford Council of Garden Clubs welcomes you to Christmas in the World’s Best Little Town.

DESCRIPTION:When we think of the Normandy invasion\, we tend to concentrate on what happened on the beaches or parachute drops into the countryside beyond. Less often do we give much thought to the logistics of the invasion from the water or of the role of the Navy and Coast Guard on that fateful day. Yet it stands to reason that no one was getting anywhere near Normandy without a strong naval presence. \nIn his presentation James Ransom\, Capt.\, USN (Ret.) will look at the varied naval operations and requirements for the largest seaborne invasion in history; at what went right and what went wrong in transporting 150\,000 soldiers to Normandy on D-Day. And we will look at individual acts of valor and sacrifice by sailors who participated in Operation Neptune. \nThe talk is free and open to the public.  Guests are welcome to bring a lunch to enjoy during the program.

DESCRIPTION:Learn about the historic plastering process as it happens inside Jefferson’s retreat home. Join Henry Orton\, owner of Orton Plasterworks in Savannah\, Georgia\, as he discusses his methods being used to reconstruct the ceilings in Poplar Forest. \nThis winter Thomas Jefferson’s Poplar Forest’s villa is temporarily closed to the public while the ceilings are re-plastered. Historic plaster restoration specialists will rework the ceilings using the same materials and techniques used by Jefferson’s craftsmen in the 1800s. On Saturday\, January 27\, British master craftsman Henry Orton\, one of the finest traditional plasterers working in the United States\, and his assistant Mark Smith will present a plaster talk and tour of the plastering workspaces for those interested in historic building practices. \nAdmission to the plaster talk is free\, however donations are suggested. RSVP required.
