SUMMARY:Earth Day Celebration
DESCRIPTION:Bedford Get Together is planning a celebration of Earth Day in Bedford on April 21 from 10:00 am to 3:00 pm.   This year’s theme for Earth Day is to end plastic pollution\, a very ambitious goal but one that we can all begin.  Bedford Central Library\, Wharton Garden and Bower Center for the Arts will be the main sites for the exhibits and activities.  In case of rain the activities will move into the Library and Bower Center. \nAt least 12 additional groups have expressed interest in joining the event and are planning hands on activities or displays that will be free to the public.  They include Land and Table\, Master Gardeners\, Citizens Climate Lobby\, Claytor Nature Studies Center\, Bedford Urban Gardens\, Bedford County Solid Waste Management and Friends of the Bedford Central Library.   Examples of the some of the activities include creating artwork from recycled book pages\, and planting seeds in planters made from recycled paper rolls. Bedford Get Together will also give away oak trees to the first 100 people attending! \nNot only can you and your family participate in these fun activities\, but Azul and Town Kitchen Provisions will be open and serving Earth Day food.  For your enjoyment\, the band The Freaks of Odder will perform that day.  The Freaks play rock music from contemporary artists to punk and alternative bands such as MMJ\, Deer Tick\, and Clash\, to name a few. \nIf you or your group would like to offer something appropriate for the event\, contact Bedford Get Together at bedfordgettogether@gmail.com for more information. \n(Bedford Get Together is a 501c3 grassroots organization dedicated to strengthening community through celebrating our shared values\, providing learning opportunities about issues important to our life together\, and raising awareness about the wealth of support resources in Bedford.  For more information about Bedford Get Together\, visit www.bedfordgettogether.com.)

DESCRIPTION:Richard Elder\, a volunteer at the National D-Day Memorial and the son of a D-Day veteran\, will speak on his father’s unit\, the 743rd Tank Battalion\, the unit which landed immediately in front of the Bedford Boys on Dog Green sector of Omaha Beach. \nHis deeply personal talk will highlight the formation and training of the 743rd\, the development of amphibious Sherman tanks and the mixed record they had on D-Day\, his father’s death in combat near St. Lo\, and the unit’s fight through the hedgerows and on to victory. \nThe talk is free and open to the public. Guests are welcome to bring a lunch to enjoy during the program.

SUMMARY:Wounded Warrior Amputee Softball Game
DESCRIPTION:The Wounded Warrior Amputee Softball Team (WWAST) will conduct a tour of Virginia in April playing multiple cities\, with the grand finale event happening in Bedford with an exciting double-header vs. Bedford County First Responders. The opening ceremony will begin at 12 p.m. on Saturday\, April 28 with the first game starting at 1 p.m. \nThe WWAST consists of men and women\, both veterans and active duty soldiers\, from all service branches\, who have sustained injuries resulting in amputation. Through extensive rehabilitation\, they have become competitive athletes\, playing against teams across the country in competitive\, celebrity\, and exhibition games. Come out and help honor our heroes and cheer them on as they travel the Commonwealth. \nThis is a family-friendly event and helps the WWAST raise awareness and funds for their signature event\, the WWAST Kids Camp\, which empowers young boys and girls with amputations.
