Originating from ancient Chinese philosophy\, Tai Chi is an “internal” art that changes the body\, mind\, and heart from the inside out. Scientific studies have shown health benefits too numerous to list for mental\, physical and emotional health. It is a multifaceted art with a number of integrative elements and practices. In this class\, we will practice the Hunyuan Qigong and study the Hunyuan 24 movement choreography. DESCRIPTION:At our annual Scout Day\, scouts participate in activities that include actual artifacts\, hands-on demonstrations and games that help them learn more about World War II—while earning a National D-Day Memorial patch. A guided tour of the Memorial is included. Admission for each registered scout and scout leader is $5. \nFor an additional $5\, earn a Boy Scout “Scouting Heritage” merit badge or a Girl Scout “Public Speaker” badge. Both programs occur at the Bedford Area Welcome Center (816 Burks Hill Road\, Bedford\, VA). The Boy Scout “Scouting Hertiage” merit badge will be from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. and the Girl Scout “Public Speaker” badge program will be from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m.. Only Scouts are required to purchase a ticket for this. Leaders and Parents can attend the merit badge program at no charge. \nAdvance registration and pre-payment is preferred by Friday\, March 15\, 2019. DESCRIPTION:Helen will be presenting gallery talks at Goose Creek Studio and Bower Center for the arts\, each location exhibiting her collection\, “Faces & Facades: a 50-year Retrospective” \n2pm at Goose Creek Studio and 2:45 at Bower Center. The talks will be relevant to the works exhibited at each location. \nJoin us for one or both! \n“Faces & Facades: A 50-Year Retrospective” is an exhibition of oil paintings and graphite drawings created by Helen Hubler\, who has been painting and drawing for about 56 years. \nSeventeen of Helen’s paintings at Goose Creek Studio and 60 at Bower Center for the Arts will be on exhibit through April 27. \nFriday\, April 12\, 5-8pm. There will be 2nd Friday receptions at both locations and Helen will be at available at Bower Center to meet visitors and talk with them individually about her work and answer questions. \nAbout Helen Hubler: \nIn 1992 Helen and her husband relocated to Virginia after many years in New York and New Jersey. She studied at The Art Students League and The National Academy of Design. Her concentrated study of oil painting and drawing began in 1963 and has continued throughout the years. This led to conducting workshops\, doing commission work\, and exhibiting in many solo and group exhibitions\, and receiving numerous awards for her work. \nAn excerpt from her artist statement: “I’m fond of narrative (I love a good book!). My paintings and drawings are laced with narrative elements. If they do not suggest stories\, there is often some psychological content. This qigong method is rooted in the philosophy behind traditional Chinese medicine and consists of gentle\, mindful movements which are practiced with iterative intention. \nTai Chi:\nCome start your day with a gentle movement art. Originating from ancient Chinese philosophy\, Tai Chi is an “internal” art that changes the body\, mind\, and heart from the inside out. Scientific studies have shown health benefits too numerous to list for mental\, physical and emotional health. It is a multifaceted art with a number of integrative elements and practices. In this class\, we will practice the Hunyuan Qigong and study the Hunyuan 24 movement choreography. Hunyuan Qigong consists of gentle\, mindful movements which are practiced with iterative intention. \nThese simple movements are the essential building blocks of Tai Chi\, put together in various combinations throughout the 24 movement choreography\, creating the purposeful and gentle movement routines that most people think of when they imagine people practicing Tai chi in a park. \nRegular practice of these movements will unlock the many health benefits that Tai Chi has to offer. The simple\, easy to remember\, easy to physically perform movements in this set contain the essential ingredients of Tai Chi and are suitable for nearly everyone\, regardless of age\, fitness level or physical difficulties.
