He received the Bachelor and Master of Music degrees from James Madison University and the Doctor of Musical Arts Degree from the University of Iowa brass methods. He teaches music at Lynchburg College where he directs the Jazz Ensemble and teaches trumpet\, Music Appreciation and courses in world music\, music appreciation\, conducting and brass methods.  Previously\, he was Assistant Professor of Music at Northeast Lakeview College in Universal City\, Texas\, and directed the jazz ensemble at Trinity University in San Antonio\, Texas.

DESCRIPTION:37North is a group of jazz musicians living in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia who have united to bring their personalities\, energy\, and stylish jazz interpretations together. 37 degrees north is the latitude coordinate for Bedford County\, VA and the group enjoys celebrating this area of Virginia with their name and music.  \nEach musician’s experience in playing a variety of music genres comes together in an eclectic jazz soundscape. The group’s repertoire includes a crossover style that brings a jazz interpretation to standards\, folk\, regional\, and pop songs\, including some originals by Nichols and Walter. Their music takes aim at creating a sense of scenery\, introspection\, and inspiration and mesmerizes listeners.  \nAbout the Musicians \nJazz trumpeter Scott Walter\, Bedford Community Orchestra (BCO) conductor  enjoys introducing and interweaving melodic and harmonic ideas with Karen Nichols\, on keyboard and vocals. Karen\, who also plays with the BCO has a versatile background as a performer and songwriter\, adding rich\, textured chords to the harmonic mix. Ben Masters\, on upright acoustic bass\, is another member of the BCO and enjoys adding low tone colors to 37North’s tonal palette\, while BCO drummer/percussionist Patrick Skelley\, who has played for thirty years with ensembles up and down the East Coast\, adds rhythmic figures\, timing and interesting percussive sounds to the group’s performances. \nTickets: $10 in advance | $12 at the door \nCash Bar is Available \nTicket Locations: Bower Center office or Online.

SUMMARY:Lenny Marcus Trio in concert at Bower Center
DESCRIPTION:Lenny Marcus hails from Wash\, DC\, but he worked for many years in New Orleans\, studying and performing with legends such as Ray Bryant\, Ellis Marsalis\, Alvin Batiste\, and recording with David “Fathead” Newman\, Charlie Byrd\, Frank Foster\, Sonny Fortune\, Brian Lynch\, Jane Powell and others. His band is a well-schooled jazz group. Lenny has recorded 20+ CDs to date\, 22 as leader\, performed in two international jazz festivals\, and has had his music featured on the National Weather Channel\, NPR’s All that Jazz and All Songs Considered. Two of his songs were finalists in the ISC international song writer’s competition. Lenny is a highly trained jazz pianist who also plays flute and adds vocals. SUMMARY:Bower Concert with Ken and Alli\, Bedford’s folk duo
DESCRIPTION:Ken Horne and Allison Johnson will perform at the Bower Center on Saturday September 17th beginning at 7:30 PM.   Tickets are $10 in advance bought at lynchburgtickets.com or Bower Center.   Tickets at the door are $12.  The price of the tickets is kept low because of the Town of Bedford’s Government Challenge Grant and the VCA. \nKen and Alli treat their audiences to a show spanning several centuries and many genres of American folk music. From contemporary Americana to sixteenth-century Childe ballads\, from classic blues to country music standards\, they offer a variety of musical flavors. Ken Horne and Allison Johnson perform as the vocal duet “Ken and Alli”. Their stage show spans several centuries and many genres of American folk music. From contemporary Americana to sixteenth century Childe ballads\, from classic blues to country music standards (and some that ought to be)\, Ken and Alli offer a variety of musical styles and arrangements that can only be described as delightfully eclectic. Allison’s sparkling lead vocals and intricate harmonies blend perfectly with Ken’s rich baritone. Accompanied by finger style guitar and six string banjo with an occasional harmonica bit thrown in\, Ken and Alli create an evening of music that is entertaining\, inspirational\, and mostly\, a whole lot of fun.
