DESCRIPTION:During WWII\, tens of thousands of American airmen were held in German POW camps. Many received from the YMCA and the Red Cross a blank journal called “A Wartime Log” to record their thoughts\, paste photos\, or preserve sketches. Sgt. Robert Folk was one such prisoner; his journal\, now in the D-Day Memorial collection\, gives an important glimpse into life in a German Stalag. Director of Education John D. Long will reveal\, for the first time publicly\, what Folk’s unique vision can teach us. The program is free and open to the public.

DESCRIPTION:Join us at the Welcome Center as we kick off National Travel & Tourism Week! Every destination has a story to tell about its unique offerings\, and NTTW is a great opportunity to showcase some of what Bedford has to offer. \n\nOn May 7\, 11 a.m. – 2 p.m.\, learn more about the Bedford Artisan Trail\, Little Town Players\, and upcoming events and classes at the Bower Center For The Arts. There will also be live music on the patio with Ken Horne (of Bedford’s folk duo Ken and Alli) and everyone is invited to bring their lunch and enjoy the music at the picnic area behind the Welcome Center (music 11:30 a.m. – 1 p.m.)\n\n\n\nThe Welcome Center/Dept of Tourism will also have a table with the chance to win a prize as well as learn about volunteer opportunities. This is free and open to the public. Please stop by and see what’s going on in Bedford!

SUMMARY:Lunchbox Lecture Series: “The Heroic 743rd”
DESCRIPTION:Richard Elder\, a volunteer at the National D-Day Memorial and the son of a D-Day veteran\, will speak on his father’s unit\, the 743rd Tank Battalion\, the unit which landed immediately in front of the Bedford Boys on Dog Green sector of Omaha Beach. \nHis deeply personal talk will highlight the formation and training of the 743rd\, the development of amphibious Sherman tanks and the mixed record they had on D-Day\, his father’s death in combat near St. Lo\, and the unit’s fight through the hedgerows and on to victory. \nThe talk is free and open to the public. Guests are welcome to bring a lunch to enjoy during the program.
