SUMMARY:October Lunchbox Lecture
DESCRIPTION:During WWII\, tens of thousands of American airmen were held in German POW camps. Many received from the YMCA and the Red Cross a blank journal called “A Wartime Log” to record their thoughts\, paste photos\, or preserve sketches. Sgt. Robert Folk was one such prisoner; his journal\, now in the D-Day Memorial collection\, gives an important glimpse into life in a German Stalag. Director of Education John D. Long will reveal\, for the first time publicly\, what Folk’s unique vision can teach us. The program is free and open to the public.

SUMMARY:Lunchbox Lecture Series: “Josephine Baker: ‘The Black Pearl’ in the French Resistance”
DESCRIPTION:Josephine Baker became an unlikely spy for the French Resistance in WWII. Growing up poor in the streets of St. Louis\, Missouri and struggling to survive in an American society plagued with racism\, Baker eventually left the United States and became a cabaret sensation in Paris. \nThere she offered her services as a spy\, noting to the head of the French Intelligence Service\, “The people of Paris have given me everything. They have given me their hearts\, and I have given them mine. I am ready to give them my life.” \nDuring her time in the Resistance\, she collected invaluable information on German troop movements while hiding war refugees in her home. After the war\, Baker received the Croix de Guerre and the Medal of Resistance. \nThis fascinating talk by National D-Day Memorial Foundation President April Cheek-Messier is in celebration of Black History Month. The talk is free and open to the public. Guests are welcome to bring a lunch to enjoy during the program.

SUMMARY:Lunchbox Lecture Series: “D-Day and Operation Neptune: The Naval Contribution”
DESCRIPTION:When we think of the Normandy invasion\, we tend to concentrate on what happened on the beaches or parachute drops into the countryside beyond. Less often do we give much thought to the logistics of the invasion from the water or of the role of the Navy and Coast Guard on that fateful day. Yet it stands to reason that no one was getting anywhere near Normandy without a strong naval presence. \nIn his presentation James Ransom\, Capt.\, USN (Ret.) will look at the varied naval operations and requirements for the largest seaborne invasion in history; at what went right and what went wrong in transporting 150\,000 soldiers to Normandy on D-Day. And we will look at individual acts of valor and sacrifice by sailors who participated in Operation Neptune. \nThe talk is free and open to the public.  Guests are welcome to bring a lunch to enjoy during the program.

SUMMARY:D-Day Lunchbox Lecture ~ Regine's Story: A Tale Of Survival In Occupied Belgium
DESCRIPTION:The National D-Day Memorial is pleased to offer an extra Lunchbox Lecture this autumn so our supporters can experience an inspiring tale  of heroism and endurance. At noon on October 26th\, at the Bedford Area Welcome Center\, Regine Nozyce Archer will share her unique WWII experiences in war-torn Belgium. \nBorn in 1924 in Krakow\, Poland\, Regine’s family moved to Liege Belgium when she was a young girl\, little knowing that by 1940 they would be caught up in a great global conflict. \nForced to hide her Jewish heritage from the Nazi occupiers\, Regine and her sister took refuge in a Belgian convent\, where only the Mother Superior knew the truth about the refugees.  When the war returned to Belgium in 1944\, she became a nurse for wounded soldiers and civilians\, and eventually an interpreter for the U.S. Army\, where she met her future husband. \nThe inspiring and captivating story will leave you amazed and profoundly moved. \nThe program is free and open to the public.  Guests are invited to bring a lunch.
