DESCRIPTION:June 6\, 2019 marks the 75th Anniversary of D-Day\, a milestone that is expected to represent the last large gathering of D-Day veterans around the globe.  Events are planned throughout the day. \nAerial Tribute to WWII Veterans – 10:00 a.m. –  Join us as WWII aircraft take to the sky in a breathtaking display and pay tribute to the Greatest Generation who flew them. \n“The Final Salute” Commemorative Observance – 11:00 a.m. – The ceremony will include international dignitaries\, special music\, and Normandy veteran roll-call. \nOn-Site Commemoration Activities – 6:30 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. – Throughout the day\, explore WWII re-enactor displays of units who landed on D-Day; visit “Profiles of Honor\,” the mobile museum dedicated to Virginia’s WWI and WWII veterans; enjoy music from the Enduring Freedom band and USO show; gather with WWII and D-Day veterans in the Veterans Reunion Tent; and partake in our food truck area that is open for breakfast and lunch.

DESCRIPTION:This special Memorial Day ceremony officially recognizes the men and women who have sacrificed their lives for our freedoms. \nThe program begins at 11 a.m. Special music by Brass 5. The latest installment of veteran bricks will also be dedicated. \nKeynote speaker is Alex Kershaw\, journalist and a New York Times bestselling author of books on World War II including “The Bedford Boys: One American Town’s Ultimate D-Day Sacrifice.” There will be a book signing following the ceremony for his newest release\, “The First Wave: The D-Day Warriors Who Led the Way to Victory in World War II.” Books will be available for purchase in the Memorial’s gift store. \nThe Memorial will dedicate a brand new education Quonset hut named after long-time supporter Fleda Ring following the ceremony. The new pavilion is the third Q-hut building to be dedicated within the past two years. In keeping with the educational emphasis of the Memorial\, these Quonset huts mimic Plymouth\, England 1944 where the troops stayed prior to the Normandy invasion. DESCRIPTION:Support our Armed Forces at the National D-Day Memorial by participating in a patriotic themed 5K Run/Walk. Not only does the race begin and end at the picturesque Memorial\, but a total change in elevation of 220 feet provides a unique challenge for runners of all levels to “Conquer the Hill.” Participants will also have the opportunity to honor and interact with members of the Armed Forces past and present. \nCan’t make it race day? No problem. Consider our “Sleep In” option. Sign up to be a “Fortitude Runner” to show your support for our Armed Forces and the National D-Day Memorial. Supporters at this level will be mailed a commemorative 2019 race t-shirt. \nEarly bird pricing ends March 31 and the t-shirt guarantee deadline is May 1. Prizes will be awarded for the top finishers overall for the 5K Run and to the most spirited and top fundraisers. The top three finishers in each age category and all runners 12 years old and younger will receive a medal.

DESCRIPTION:At our annual Scout Day\, scouts participate in activities that include actual artifacts\, hands-on demonstrations and games that help them learn more about World War II—while earning a National D-Day Memorial patch. A guided tour of the Memorial is included. Admission for each registered scout and scout leader is $5. \nFor an additional $5\, earn a Boy Scout “Scouting Heritage” merit badge or a Girl Scout “Public Speaker” badge. Both programs occur at the Bedford Area Welcome Center (816 Burks Hill Road\, Bedford\, VA). The Boy Scout “Scouting Hertiage” merit badge will be from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. and the Girl Scout “Public Speaker” badge program will be from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m.. Only Scouts are required to purchase a ticket for this. Leaders and Parents can attend the merit badge program at no charge. \nAdvance registration and pre-payment is preferred by Friday\, March 15\, 2019. DESCRIPTION:Before his death in 2009\, Elisha “Ray” Nance\, the last surviving officer of the “Bedford Boys” –Co. A\, 116th Regiment\, 29th Division—penned an account of his experiences before and after WWII. He intended to publish his book\, but never achieved that dream. Now his children have published his fascinating memoir under the title “Dawn on Omaha Beach: We Were There.” \nA book launch will be held Friday\, October 26\, 2018 at 1:00 p.m. at the National D-Day Memorial’s Johnson Pavilion. Members of the Nance family will be on hand to discuss the book—which follows Nance’s military career from enlisting in the pre-war Virginia National Guard\, to his company’s arrival to England\, to their fateful role played on D-Day.

DESCRIPTION:The National D-Day Memorial will mark the 74th anniversary of Operation Overlord with a ceremony on Wednesday\, June 6 at 11 a.m. This year’s commemoration features Pat Waters\, the grandson of General George S. Patton and Desmond Doss Jr. \nFollowing the address\, Normandy veteran Ash Rothlein will preside over the annual remembrance at the Memorial’s “Homage” sculpture. The observance reminds up of the heroes of June 6\, 1944 who did not return home to receive our thanks. Representatives of the nation of France\, a people always ready to honor those who liberated them from brutal Nazi occupation\, will join us for the tribute.
