Patton and Desmond Doss Jr. \nFollowing the address\, Normandy veteran Ash Rothlein will preside over the annual remembrance at the Memorial’s “Homage” sculpture. The observance reminds up of the heroes of June 6\, 1944 who did not return home to receive our thanks. Representatives of the nation of France\, a people always ready to honor those who liberated them from brutal Nazi occupation\, will join us for the tribute. DESCRIPTION:At our annual Scout Day\, scouts participate in activities that include actual WWII artifacts\, hands-on demonstrations and games\, and have the opportunity to hear about a World War II veteran’s wartime experience—while earning a National D-Day Memorial patch. A guided tour of the Memorial will follow. Admission for each registered scout and scout leader is $5. \nIn the afternoon from 2pm-4pm\, for an additional fee of $5 per Girl or Boy Scout\, we will offer two merit badge programs\, which will be announced at a later date. Free admission from 10 a.m. – Noon. \nMichael Dolski\, PhD\, Historian with the Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency (DPAA)\, will give the keynote address “Remembering the Sacrifice:  POWs\, MIAs\, and the Quest to Account for the Missing.” \nThe agency’s mission is to achieve the fullest possible accounting for our missing military personnel for their families and their nation.  The DPAA is based in Arlington\, Virginia; with facilities at Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam\, Hawaii and Offut Air Force Base\, Nebraska.  The defense agency is manned jointly by more than 600 Soldiers\, Sailors\, Airmen\, Marines and civilians with specialized skills.  Since the beginning of 2017\, that DPAA reports its accounted for 108 missing American service members. \nClick here to watch a brief video about the DPAA’s remarkable work. \nRichmond WWII veteran Russell Scott will be our honored guest. As a member of the U.S. Army Air Corps\, Scott was a tail gunner on a B-25 Mitchell bomber.  When his plane was shot down over Italy\, Scott kicked open the hatch and slid onto the tail.  Feet dangling\, he rolled off\, pulling his parachute.  Scott spent a year as a prisoner of war.
