SUMMARY:Jefferson’s Curiosities: Shakespeare
DESCRIPTION:Thomas Jefferson was a man of many varied interests.  Join us at the house he deemed “the best dwelling house in the state” as we delve into topics he found particularly fascinating: from the arts to agriculture\, literature to wine\, philosophy to natural sciences\, and more. Each talk in the series includes a wine and cheese reception following the presentation. Tickets are $25/each or $80 for all four Curiosities Series talks. \nJefferson quite literally grew up with the works of William Shakespeare. His father owned a collection of his work and Jefferson continued to study\, read\, and watch Shakespeare’s works throughout his life. It should come as no surprise that these works of history and drama would be deeply influential to Thomas Jefferson throughout his life. Join us for this fascinating look into Shakespeare’s works and how they may have influenced one of  the most important documents in American history\, the Declaration of Independence. \nLocal director and Shakespeare expert\, Melora Kordos will join us to highlight some of the scenes that may have influenced Jefferson most. Hear about Jefferson’s love of Shakespeare and watch as some key scenes from Shakespeare’s work acted out on stage. Following the performance and talk\, you can interact with Melora and the cast at a wine and cheese reception in the lower level of the house. \nClick here for tickets.

SUMMARY:Plymouth Fife & Drum Corps
DESCRIPTION:Experience the performance of the Plymouth Fife and Drum Corps (PFDC)\, a Michigan-based youth-serving community organization dedicated to preserving the ancient arts of fifing\, drumming and color guard through live performances at parades\, historical and patriotic celebrations\, concerts\, cultural affairs and other civic events. Ranging in ages from 12–18\, the PFDC performs 40–50 times a year throughout the country. Their music spans the 17th to 20th centuries with an emphasis on music played during the Revolutionary War. The 10-pound\, red\, white and blue uniform currently worn by the Corps is a replica of George Washington’s personal Life Guard or foot soldiers (1776–1783). Performance begins at 11:00 a.m. and will last approximately 30 minutes. Please note the performance is included with general admission. Purchase your general admission tickets here.

DESCRIPTION:The Virginia American Revolution 250 Commission is bringing the spirit of the American Revolution to Poplar Forest! A hands-on\, interactive\, and immersive “museum on wheels\,” the VA250 Mobile Museum Experience titled Out of Many\, One is housed in a quad-expandable tractor trailer that is traveling throughout Virginia and beyond. Guests visiting this unique traveling museum will embark on a journey through pivotal moments of our fight for freedom while learning about the Revolution’s key figures as well as the often-overlooked stories of the Indigenous Virginians\, free and enslaved African Americans\, and others whose efforts secured American independence. \nOut of Many\, One will be open to the public free of charge (admission rates are applicable to experience the historic house and surrounding grounds and to attend 1776 the Musical). Out of Many\, One will be open to the public from 10 a.m.- 7 p.m. June 26-June 28\, 2025. Take advantage of this rare opportunity to commemorate the 250th anniversary of the founding of our nation and learn about Virginia’s vital role.

Dig and screen for artifacts at the 1857 Slave Dwelling with our staff – gloves provided. Not a fan of dirt? Visitors can also wash artifacts and learn about the history of the dwelling and the people who lived there from our archaeologists. Open to the whole community. \nPublic Archaeology Day is included with regular admission which can be purchased in advance here. Admission to the property includes either a docent-guided or self-guided tour of Jefferson’s retreat home\, access to exhibits in the lower level and wing of offices of the villa retreat\, and outdoor exhibits throughout the property.

Tour the Poplar Forest workshop\, learn about the tools we used to restore the house\, and prepare yourself for your own woodworking projects. \nThis is a 2 part session class which attendees can learn the art of historic woodworking. The introduction class is a learning session to prepare you for the second class held on March 15 th where you will use the tools and make your own souvenir photo frame. DESCRIPTION:Join Poplar Forest’s Department of Archaeology and Landscapes every Friday at 1:30 PM  through August 30 for an in-depth look into their current excavations and what they are learning about the people who lived in and around the 1857 Slave Dwelling. While the 1857 Slave Dwelling was built after Jefferson’s lifetime\, it is historically important as it is the only original dwelling built for enslaved people still standing on the property. As part of the 1857 Slave Dwelling Restoration Project’s efforts to stabilize\, research\, and restore this structure with the community\, we invite you to visit our archaeologists to see what they are finding and learning about the people who lived here. \nFriday Field Days are included with regular admission which can be purchased in advance here. Admission to the property includes either a docent-guided or self-guided tour of Jefferson’s retreat home\, access to exhibits in the lower level and wing of offices of the villa retreat\, and outdoor exhibits throughout the property.
