SUMMARY:Virtual Lunchbox Lecture
DESCRIPTION:James Triesler\, Director of Education at the Virginia War Memorial\, will speak on the wartime postal system that was a vital line of communication for those in uniform and their families at home. Getting a letter meant everything—but it wasn’t always easy or timely. Censorship\, special family codes\, microfilmed V-Mail—these were all part of the story. Triesler will also pay special tribute to the 6888th Postal Battalion\, the only all-African American\, all-female unit to serve overseas during WWII.

SUMMARY:Virtual Lunchbox Lecture: Angels of the Air
DESCRIPTION:This Lunchbox Lecture is an online event only through Facebook Live on the National D-Day Memorial’s Facebook page\, as well as their YouTube channel\, and will not be held at the National D-Day Memorial.\n“Angels of the Air: Flight Nurses in WWII” with April Cheek-Messier\, President and CEO of the National D-Day Memorial Foundation\nDuring World War II\, 31 medical air evacuation squadrons helped tend to over one million servicemen between 1943-1945\, a remarkable feat given that air evacuation was a relatively new concept at the start of the war. Providing comfort and care to those patients were 500 flight nurses serving in the U.S. Army Air Forces. Seventeen of these flight nurses were killed during the course of the war. Discover the history\, highlights\, and perils of flight nursing in WWII through the eyes of Evelyn Kowalchuk\, and the 818th Medical Air Evacuation Transport Squadron\, who landed in Normandy on D+3. Her story\, told by Foundation President April Cheek-Messier\, sheds light on the little-known story of these pioneers in history and the difference they made for patients and the future of combat medicine.

SUMMARY:Lunchbox Lecture Series-Virtual
DESCRIPTION:“The Lost Soldier: The Ordeal of a WWII GI from the Home Front to the Hurtgen Forest” with Chris Hartley\, WWII Historian and Author. \n“The Lost Soldier” offers a perspective on World War II we don’t always get from histories and memoirs. Based on the letters home of Pete Lynn\, the diary of his wife\, Ruth\, and meticulous research in primary and secondary sources\, this book recounts the war of a married couple who represent so many married couples\, so many soldiers\, in World War II. The book tells the story of this couple\, starting with their life in North Carolina and recounting how the war increasingly insinuated itself into the fabric of their lives\, until Pete Lynn was drafted\, after which the war became the essential fact of their life. Author Chris J. Hartley intricately weaves together all threads—soldier and wife\, home front and army life\, combat\, love and loss\, individual and army division—into an intimate\, engaging narrative that is at once gripping military history and engaging social history. \nThis Lunchbox Lecture is an online event only through Facebook Live or YouTube on the National D-Day Memorial’s Facebook page and will not be held at the National D-Day Memorial.
