Wanderlust is defined as a strong desire to travel, but here in Virginia, we call that feeling WanderLove. You can experience this by finding a hidden gem or going on a road trip with friends or family! Peaks of Ottter Winery and Johnson’s Orchard is one of Bedford’s most unique places to visit. The atmosphere and staff make you feel at home from the moment you walk through the door. This hidden gem will give you all of the WanderLove feelings.
If you are a lover of wine or apples, Peaks of Otter Winery is the ultimate day trip for you! When visiting, you can count on three things: a great view, apple cider donuts, and amazing wine. With over 30 different types of wine, this family owned business has been around for over 100 years and has been making wine since 1996. The Johnson family started their business as an apple orchard, but in 1995, Danny and his wife Nancy decided that making and selling wine would bring in more business. They were right! The wine varies from sweet to dry and is available for tasting everyday during the spring, summer, and fall months.
The many unique qualities that this winery has is countless. It is the first fruit winery in Virginia and is the first working farm in Virginia to have a vacation rental house on the property. You can rent “Elmo’s Rest” through the Peaks of Otter Winery website. The home has been in the family for several generations! While on the farm this time of year, you will see fields of sunflowers, beautiful mountain views, and lots of animals! Feed for the animals can be purchased inside the store on site.
