Forest
The eastern part of Bedford County has tons of shops and restaurants but also ice cream! Rookie’s is best known for their incredible ice cream sandwiches! Two other delicious sweet treat places are Monkee Joes and Cowlicks! Monkee Joes also offers coffee, so if you need that jolt of energy alongside your dessert, then this is the place for you! Cowlicks Homemade Ice Cream is the newest addition to the Forest area and is located in The BackYard, a brand new spot in Forest with several food trucks! On your way to the Town of Bedford from Forest, you can stop by Southern Creamery ice cream truck for hand-dipped Ashby’s ice cream, where there’s always a new flavor to try!

Dairy Queen is famously known for their ice cream and has been a Bedford institution for more than 40 years! Visit this unique location where you walk up to the window and order your favorite sweet treats, and you’re likely to spot a local baseball or softball team while you’re there! Another spot that just opened earlier this summer is Magic Ice Cream! This is another walk up location and offers a deck with picnic tables and umbrellas. Magic Ice Cream is owned by the same family that owns Bella Italia Restaurant right across the street, which is a local favorite serving authentic Italian dishes, right in downtown Bedford!
Moneta/Smith Mountain Lake
Beautiful Smith Mountain Lake has more to offer than just water sports! In Moneta, Downtown Pizzeria offers lunch and dinner and is also where Freckle’s ice cream parlor is located. Mitchell’s Restaurant & Pizzeria is a welcoming lakeside spot with outdoor seating serving breakfast, lunch and dinner! The newest addition to Mitchell’s is Captain Scoops, serving premium hand-dipped ice cream! You won’t regret spending a summer day at the lake and enjoying ice cream from one of these great locations!
